The Ministry of Government and Consumer Services’ Athletics Commissioner administers the Athletics Control Act, which regulates professional boxing and kickboxing in Ontario.
The commissioner’s mandate is to ensure the health and safety of participants and spectators at these sports events. This includes issuing licences to event promoters who must supply proof of public liability insurance, that there will be medical personnel on site and that prescribed safety measures have been taken.
If the commissioner or a designate finds any breach of the act or regulations, charges can be filed against the event’s promoter. If an unsanctioned event is held, the promoter may face fines of up to $10,000 on conviction.
In addition, professional boxers are required to undergo extensive annual medical testing. Ontario’s health and safety record for professional boxing under the current Athletics Commissioner is excellent. There have been no matches resulting in serious injuries in several years.
