Ontario Commodity Futures Act Advisory Committee Final Report

The final report of the advisory committee to review Ontario’s Commodity Futures Act (CFA) was presented to Minister Gerry Phillips in January, 2007.

As statutorily required, Minister Phillips appointed the Committee to review the Commodity Futures Act in May, 2005.  The purpose of the review was to ensure that Ontario benefits from a modern regulatory regime with strong investor confidence and protection.

Since introduction of the Commodity Futures Act in 1978, markets have evolved dramatically as a result of the launch of new products, technological innovations and a trend towards trading globalization.

The Committee was asked to prepare a report which addressed whether the Commodity Futures Act, in its current form, provides an appropriate regulatory framework, and if not, to make recommendations on a framework which would help maintain and foster strong Ontario participation in Canadian and international derivatives markets.

This report is a report of the Committee and the views expressed therein are those of Committee members and not of the Ontario Securities Commission or the Province of Ontario.

Archives of Ontario’s inaugural exhibit

On September 15, The Honourable Harinder S. Takhar, Minister of Government Services, launched the Archives of Ontario’s inaugural exhibit in its facilities, which opened at York University this spring.  The exhibit, Ontario – On the Map, demonstrates how the purpose of early provincial maps changed from tools for settlement and exploitation of resources to tools for understanding the evolving cultural and physical landscape of Ontario.
