London Police Chief Murray Faulkner talks about the kinds of jobs young
people will be doing this summer with his police force

News

Over 180 youth from high needs London neighbourhoods will gain valuable summer work experience through government-funded employment programs. Six positions are with the London Police Service.

Young people in high needs neighbourhoods may not always have the same opportunities as other teenagers . These summer job programs will help them gain confidence and skills in the workplace.

Ontario also funds five London youth outreach workers who help hard-to-reach young people year-round in the places youth hang out.

Quotes

“These are much more than summer jobs,” said Children and Youth Services Minister Deb Matthews. “We’re giving these young people opportunities to explore options for their future.”

“Many young people just want to be given a chance and these jobs are a great opportunity for London ’s hardest to reach youth,”said Steve Cordes, Executive Director of Youth Opportunities Unlimited, the agency running the summer job program in London .

Quick Facts

  • To be eligible for the summer job program, youth must live in the neighbourhoods of Carling, Huron Heights , White Oaks/Southdale or Limberlost.
  • Ontario is providing about $935,000 to support London youth. This funding is for summer job programs, youth outreach workers and school-based programs to help youth in conflict with the law.
