Roy McMurtry Youth Centre

The Roy McMurtry Youth Centre is a state-of-the-art facility that will accommodate up to 192 young people who are in conflict with the law and who were between the ages of 12 to 17 at the time of their offence.

The centre will provide a wide range of programs and services to help youth transition back into their home communities as productive members of society once they leave the centre.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Facility size: 220,000 square feet on 77 acres of land.
  • 192-bed campus style facility, housing both male (160) and female (32) youth.
  • LEED certified. LEED (Leadership Energy and Efficient Design) certification is a voluntary initiative directed at designing, constructing, operating and certifying the world’s greenest buildings

CAMPUS DETAILS

  • Campus style layout of the centre allows youth to experience as normal a daily routine as possible in a secure facility.
  • Youth will be accommodated in small campus style cottages with a maximum of 16 people per unit, with two units per cottage. Males and females will be accommodated in separate buildings.
  • Five cottages will accommodate males.
  • One cottage will accommodate females.
  • The facility also includes education-focused classrooms, a program services building, workshops, a non-denominational multi-faith centre, as well as areas designated for physical education.

PROGRAMMING

Studies show that providing youth in custody and/or community-based programs with meaningful supports and services, while holding them accountable for their actions, helps to steer them away from crime.

Programs and services available at the centre will include: health care services, clinical counselling, mentoring, life skills, behaviour management, healthy relationships, and emotional and mental health programs.

The Ministry of Children and Youth Services is partnering with the Peel District School Board to provide academic and certificate programs, and vocational and skills training on site, including horticulture/landscaping studies, woodworking, framing, drywall, small engine repairs and other programs for pathways to employment.
